The State of Washington earns “TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award” for its detailed search by offense feature, the most thorough of its kind in the country. The address search is also the most flexible—you choose to search from one to 15 miles from your home or other address of interest. The Washington State Sex Offender Registry provides an unprecedented level of support. Look for relevant FAQs, tips as you conduct searches and a help section. Washington residents have a valuable resource to protect themselves and their families.
Like many other states, Washington includes Level II and Level III offenders on the site. Sex offenders are assessed for risk of re-offending. Assessment criteria includes: the sex crime(s), their lifestyle, other crimes they have committed, whether or not they have predatory characteristics and their participation in approved treatment programs. Level III offenders pose the highest risk to the community. This website makes it especially easy to differentiate between them with a color code system.
Washington allows you to search two ways: by offender information and by an address of interest. The offender search can be as general or as specific as you prefer. Search for all registered sex offenders convicted of child molestation or those in a particular city, zip code or county. You can also search for a specific offender by last name and address. The address search has a similar level of detail. Type your address and select a radius from one to 15 miles around it and Level of Offender.
For both types of searches results include both an interactive map with Level III and Level II icons and lists of sex offenders separated by valid and invalid addresses. Clicking on a map icon or a name on the list will bring you to the sex offender’s profile. In addition to physical characteristics, the profile displays a map of the sex offender’s neighborhood with schools and daycare facilities clearly marked.
Washington’s interactive maps powered by Microsoft MapPoint are easy to use and provide a snapshot of risk from sex offenders in your area. This sex offender registry does one of the best jobs in providing safety tips and information to its users through FAQs, tips on most pages, a help page, and a warning signs section.
The Washington Sex Offender Registry is simple to find and use. The site is easy to navigate with well–labeled buttons and fields. You can access the page through a search engine—we typed “Washington Sex Offender” into Google. Or you can find a link to the registry on the Washington State homepage.
