Vermont Reviewer's Comments

The Vermont Sex Offender Registry provides essential information earlier in the search process than many other sites. Search results include risk assessment and treatment status. However, without addresses the usefulness of this site for those concerned about the presence of sex offenders in their neighborhoods is questionable.

Information Provided:

Vermont law requires certain registered sex offenders to be on the website including convictions for aggravated sexual assault, child kidnappers, those who are convicted of a second or subsequent sexual offense, sexual predators, designated as high risk offenders, and those who have not completed recommended treatment. A standard physical description, aliases, photo, date of birth and city of residence is listed for each. The offense and date of conviction is listed as well.

However, addresses and victim information is omitted, making the usefulness of the information questionable for communities concerned about sex offenders in their own neighborhoods.

Search Functions:

Search this site by last name or county or view the entire list. The results list includes more information than many sites: date of birth, and whether or not the sex offender is wanted, compliant with ordered treatment, and high risk.

Additional Site Features:

The Vermont Criminal Information Center homepage states in plain language the offenses and conditions requiring registration and what information is available to the public. This page is similar to the FAQs pages on other state sites. A link to the corresponding Vermont Sex Offender Registry Law is included. However, there are no links to public education sites for safety and prevention.

Ease of Use:

This site is easy to use and has a convenient drop down county menu for searching.

Contact Information:

Contact the Vermont Criminal Information Center by telephone or mail or email the Webmaster.

Summary:

First and foremost, Vermont must add address information: home, work and school. If this is done, adding an address search function and an interactive map would provide the level of service offered by higher-ranking state sex offender registries.
