Oregon Reviewer's Comments

The Oregon Sex Offender Registry online includes only those offenders designated as Predatory by Oregon law. This may be the narrowest pool of offenders posted on any site, but the group poses the highest risk to the community, consistent with the goal of public safety.

Oregon offers an offender search with flexible criteria, victim information in the profiles, and an interactive map, making it one of the better sites in the country. Could it be better? Yes, integrating the mapping with the profiles would improve Oregon’s site.

Information Provided:

The sex offender profiles have a photo, a physical description and the most recent home address of the offender. Profiles do not include employer or school addresses or vehicle information.

Offense information includes the conviction date, abbreviated offense name, which should be spelled out for a public site, the age of the victim, and whether or not the victim was known to the offender, and the methods of offending—one of the most complete offense descriptions in the country.

Search Functions:

The Oregon search is divided into two categories: Person Information and Location Information. The Person Information search is unusually flexible: ranges are available for age, weight and height. To search by location, enter a street number, name, city, county or zip code for results. Note: searching by larger cities results in a message stating, “too many results, try again.” This should be corrected.

Oregon’s offers a separate mapping search. Type in an address and predators will be mapped within a one-mile radius. Click to see the profile. Unfortunately, the mapping function is one way. The site would be improved if sex offenders could be mapped from the Location Information results and the profiles. Higher ranked state sites offer this level of integration.

Additional Site Features:

Oregon falls short in this area, offering only legal information.

Ease of Use:

Oregon’s registry is well designed, easy to navigate and produces consistent results.

Contact Information:

You can contact the Oregon State Police by phone or email.

Summary:

The Oregon Sex Offender Registry site provides the most important information to its communities, offers flexible searches and an interactive map. Adding safety and prevention information and increasing the map function would make this good site better.
