North Carolina is one of the few states to begin its registry with a letter from the Attorney General inviting residents to sign up for email alerts and map neighborhood sex offenders close to home, school, child care center or a park of concern. This service-oriented approach is evident throughout the site.
Sexual predators, aggravated offenses and recidivists are clearly labeled under a large color photograph. Information is organized into four sections: description/registration status, other offender information like aliases, scars, marks and tattoos, conviction information and address history. Conviction information is sparse.
North Carolina provides three ways to search: near a specified location, by offender including status like sexual predator, aggravated and recidivist, and by latitude/longitude for those areas without a physical address.
North Carolina provides one of the better interactive maps in the country. Choose a location and a map is displayed with icons representing the addresses of registered sex offenders. You may specify a radius of one, three or five miles from a specific address. Roll over the icon and a synopsis of the sex offender’s profile is displayed at the top of the page. Click on the icon for the full profile, which appears on a new page.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which maintains this site, posts links to information regarding the sex offender registry, sex offender statistics and a thorough FAQs page.
The map integrates well with specific offenders: click on an icon, see the offender’s photo and address. Search results lists offer the same feature. You may also opt-in to the email notification program from the map for the radius you specified. Profiles integrate seamlessly with the map and offer other functions. Icons allow you to map the offender, subscribe to email alerts, print the profile or link to the North Carolina Department of Correction Public Access Information System for details.
You may submit feedback to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation through an email form under the “registry contact information” section.
North Carolina offers a sophisticated interactive map, categorized sex offenders and targeted search functions. It is one of the best- designed sites in the country, offering seamless integration between maps and profiles. Safety tips, additional conviction details and work and school addresses would complete this site.
