The New York Sex Offender Registry offers one of the most complete profile databases in the country. New York includes all of the offender’s information. New York leads the country in providing additional details about the offense and how it was conducted, which can be important in risk assessment by concerned citizens. However, New York provides only a link to Google for mapping, falling short of many other states’ mapping functions.
New York’s Sex Offender Registry includes Level 2 and Level 3 offenders, moderate and high risk. The offender profiles are complete including scars, marks and tattoos and vehicle information.
The crime information is also complete. Under Offense Description & Modus Operandi there is a description, relationship to victim, weapon used, the nature of the force used, if a computer was used, and if pornography was involved. No other state supplies this level of detail.
You can search the New York registry by geographical area (county or zip code) and last name. It would be helpful to be able to search by risk level or offense and other criteria.
Each profile features a link to a MapQuest map. Lacking descriptive icons, the locations of schools and daycare centers, this is a poor alternative to a dedicated mapping function within the site.
New York provides many useful links for safety tips and education on this subject. Useful legal links are also included.
New York packs the most information on its sex offender registry homepage—text density, links and navigation options make this site more intimidating than necessary and undermine its usefulness. Recommendations: Simplify the homepage and make it easier for New Yorkers to find the information they seek. Move supporting information to linked pages.
The subdirectory is the place to search and this function is simple. A convenient drop down menu of counties is included.

The New York Sex Offender Registry offers the most crime related information for risk assessment and personal details for identification. With a dedicated interactive map, this site would be far more useful to concerned residents in New York.
