New Mexico posts the standard information for registered sex offenders who have committed certain sex offenses as determined by state law. Search is limited to offender facts and general geographic areas by city, county and zip code. New Mexico could provide a more useful site by incorporating an interactive map and educational resources for the community.
This sex offender registry publishes information about the offender like name, aliases, physical characteristics, and date of birth. One helpful detail is the date of the photograph taken, so you can easily judge how recent the image may be.
New Mexico offers a standard search function. You may search by last name, zip code, city, county, by absconder (those sex offenders with a warrant issued for their arrest), limited to the incarcerated, or look through the entire list.
New Mexico publishes a FAQs page that contains answers to common questions—many directed to the registered sex offender—but they do not publish other public education. There is also a link to New Mexico statutes.
This site is easy to use, but they do not provide a direct link to the sex offender registry from the home page. To find the sex offender list you click “Citizen Safety and Security” and a link to the site is towards the bottom of the “sites & services” list.
You can contact the New Mexico Department of Public Safety by email and they list a number for reporting inaccuracies.
The New Mexico Sex Offender Registry contains standard information for sex offenders, but does not provide adequate information on which offenders are included in the public registry and any means of assessing risk in the community. To be more helpful to the residents of New Mexico, the site should specify which types of offenders are posted and indicate a risk level, incorporate a mapping function to find sex offenders within a given radius around an address of concern, and offer safety tips. With these additions, New Mexico would go from adequate to outstanding.
