The Maine Sex Offender Registry includes certain registered sex offenders as required by law. It is the only state to limit a sex offender’s location to city, state and zip. Mapping is not available. State law requires a written request to obtain more information on a particular individual, which would include alias name(s), physical description, mailing and home address and conviction details. Through state law, Maine fails to address important common concerns for community safety commonly offered by other states.
Each profile includes date of birth, city of residence, employment information, an image and convictions with statute, case numbers, court and offense. It is unclear which types of offenders are included in the Maine Sex Offender Registry. No risk assessment is given.
Maine offers one simple search function: by first and last name, by city or by zip code with the option of expanding the area around the zip code from a five to 30 mile radius. If you search by name, you may limit your search results to home, school or work address.
The FAQs page is directed to Maine residents rather than to sex offenders or law enforcement agencies, which is a credit to Maine. Links to some helpful sites like the FBI’s Kids Page and the Jacob Wetterling Foundation are included on the home page along with links to related services like Maine Child Abuse Hotline and Maine Sexual Support Line.
The site is simple and easy to use. You can easily find the Sex Offender Registry list through the State of Maine homepage.
You can contact Maine’s State Police regarding this site by telephone or email.
Though the Maine Sex Offender Registry is easy to navigate, relevant information has been omitted, information that is common on other state registries. Without an address, mapping function, or risk assessment, Maine does little to ease the concerns for safety by its residents.
