The Iowa Sex Offender Registry is one of the easiest to use in the top ten ranked registries. This sex offender registry includes an interactive map with pop-up profile summaries, several unprecedented search filters, and email updates. Adult victim offenders are easily differentiated from child victim offenders, a helpful feature for risk assessment and addressing the varied concerns of community members. Improving the integration between mapping and profiles would make this good site significantly better.
Risk Assessment is included where required by Iowa law: the offender registered as a sex offender for the first time on or after July 1, 2005 and the offense(s) was against a minor. Unfortunately, an explanation of risk assessment levels, which are not consistent with federal standards, is not available on the site. However, Iowa does include both the victim’s age and gender, a useful factor when weighing the risk of a particular offender’s proximity.
Iowa fails to include employer address, school address and vehicle information—a common omission that should be corrected for the safety of the community.
Iowa offers one of the most detailed search functions in the country. You can search by name, location and physical description of the offender. Filter results by gender, age, weight, and hair and eye color. This is one of the few registries that allows you to search by physical characteristics.
Iowa is the only state to allow a general search by victim gender. And, an address search results in an interactive map with icons indicating adult and child victims, a useful feature in risk assessment. Run your mouse over an icon, and a thumbnail profile appears of the sex offender. The search function would be even better if you could search by risk level or offense. This way you could sort your results to violent offenders or other offenders of particular concern.
The site includes a mapping function when searching by address within a specified radius. Iowa could improve its site’s usefulness by adding the mapping feature to the profiles.
Iowa’s Sex Offender Registry offers email notifications and printable versions of pages.
The navigation bar on the Iowa site is one of the best. In just a few words Iowa gives you clear options: Search Registrants, Map Registrants Near an Address, Email Notifications & Watches and Printable Version. The interactive map features helpful color-coded icons and pop-up profiles to facilitate searching and risk assessment. Increased integration between mapping and profiles would improve this registry’s usefulness—you should be able to click the pop-up thumbnail to link to the complete profile without performing a new search.
Legal information separates physical information from crime information in the profile, which disrupts the flow of information. The safety and additional links are indirect—Iowa could provide more accessible and relevant links.
