Colorado’s Convicted Sex Offender Site includes offenders convicted of sex crimes, which are grouped into informative subcategories. Colorado labels Sexually Violent Predators, those convicted of Multiple Offenses, and those who have failed to register. Prioritizing public safety, Colorado also offers email alerts and safety information on their site. All of the data is in place to add a useful, interactive map—that’s an addition worth making.

Information Provided:  

The most essential piece of information is the Sexually Violent Predator and Multiple Offender identifier clearly placed under the photo. A physical description is listed with scars/marks/tattoos and residence address. Conviction information is listed to type of conviction and year. Work and school addresses are not listed. 

Search Functions:  

This site can be searched by category of offenders (search Felony Conviction to list all), and then by first name, last name, street name, city, zip code and county. You may specify the order of your results in the same search window. Choose to list by last name, city, zip code or county. The results list includes name, date of birth, whether or not a photo is available, last reported address, and categories. The inclusion of categories is helpful—other states should follow Colorado’s lead. 

Additional Site Features:  

Colorado does a good job at presenting the legal statutes and definitions relating to sex offender categories. They also post safety and awareness information and provide links helpful sites such as The Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault, the Rape Awareness and Assistance Program and Safer Society. Most importantly, email alerts for Sexually Violent Predators are available to the public. 

Ease of Use:  

The search function is built to progress easily whether you want to limit your search or find all convicted sex offenders in a given area. Convenient drop down menus are available for offender category, city and county.

Summary:  

Categorizing registered sex offenders is an outstanding feature of Colorado’s Convicted Sex Offender Site, offering better risk assessment information to the public. The search function offers more flexibility than many other state sites. However, Colorado lacks the interactive map that would complete this site and make it much more useful to Colorado citizens.
